Perry was born to actors Laurie Metcalf, and Jeff Perry. On the ABC sitcom Roseanne (as shown in flashback), her mother portrayed Jackie Harris in two of Perry's first TV roles. But her parents would not let her perform until she reached the age of adulthood due to the impact stress might affect their child. Perry she was shy for acting in school, began performing at Northwestern University because she wanted to make new acquaintances. Perry, after graduating from Boston University moved into New York in search of television roles. Perry was able to land small roles on TV shows like Law & Order: Criminal Intent. But, her home-sickness brought her back to California to find theater work. Perry starred with her mother as part of The Other Place at Broadway the previous year. In 2015, she appeared together with Kevin McKidd alongside her mother in Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prizewinning drama Anna Christie. The Odyssey Theatre Ensemble is located in West Los Angeles. Perry starred in the drama's nine episodes from 2016 on the ABC drama The Family. Her father played her character in The ABC show Scandal. She played an older Mary Cooper (Sheldon Cooper's mother) in Young Sheldon. This spin-off series that was part of the CBS show The Big Bang Theory was another portrayal by her younger mother. The character was chosen by auditions, even the fact that she had a deep connection with it.
